Can the encrypted storage in iOS be erased?

The iOS devices have a built-in encryption between the flash memory and the system's main memory. For this reason, iOS devices can be erased using Cryptographic Erase. This process overwrites the old AES-256 encryption keys and renders all user data on the device cryptographically inaccessible.

In BMDE it is possible to erase iOS devices with Cryptographic Erase, but in addition it is also possible to erase the encrypted memory.

The erasure standards on iOS erase the device as follows:

  •  "Apple iOS Erasure" erases the device with Cryptographic Erase.

  • All other erasure standards first erase the device with Cryptographic Erase and then override it with the selected algorithm.
